On Sunday morning (Dec. 8), TMZ broke the news that Juice WRLD, a.k.a. Jarad Anthony Higgins, had arrived at Chicago’s Midway Airport after a Los Angeles flight and had been arrested at the airport. He was still alive when paramedics came to the scene, but shortly afterwards he was pronounced dead at a local hospital. (Billboard contacted the members of Juice WRLD.)

The Chicago MC first gained traction with the song “All Girls Are The Same” at the beginning of 2018 before his follow-up track, “Lucid Dreams,” became one of that year’s biggest hits, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The smash single helped Juice WRLD win the 2019 Billboard Music Awards ‘ top new artist award.

For his album Death Race for Love, which earlier this year became his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, he continued to score hits. Juice WRLD released a collaborative album last year with Future, Wrld on Drugs, in addition to working with musicians ranging from Lil Uzi Vert to Ellie Goulding and BTS.

“I want to be that person who takes people out of their positions,” Juice WRLD told Billboard this year in a cover story. “So perhaps I’m going to find the key in the process to get out of the place I’m at. I can fall into the low places or get stuck in them.”
